Glej, dal ti bom modro in razumno srce, tako da ni bilo tebi enakega pred teboj in ne bo za teboj vstal tebi enak. ¹³ Pa tudi to, česar nisi prosil, ti bom dal: bogastvo in slavo, tako da vse tvoje žive dni med kralji ne bo tebi enakega.

Obglavljenje Janeza Krstnika

¹⁷ Herod je bil namreč zaradi Herodiade, žene svojega brata Filipa, s katero se je bil sam oženil, dal Janeza prijeti in ga v ječi vkleniti. ¹⁸ Zakaj Janez je Herodu govoril:

»Ni ti dovoljeno imeti žene svojega brata!«

¹⁹ Herodiada ga je sovražila in bi ga rada umorila, pa ga ni mogla. ²⁰ Kajti Herod se je Janeza bal, ker je vedel, da je pravičen in svet mož, in ga je varoval; kadar koli ga je poslušal, je bil v veliki zadregi; poslušal ga je pa rad. ²¹ Prišel pa je ugoden čas, ko je Herod za svoj rojstni dan napravil gostijo svojim velikašem, častnikom in galilejskim prvakom; ²² vstopila je hči same Herodiade in plesala ter se prikupila Herodu in gostom. Tedaj je kralj rekel deklici: »Prosi me, kar koli hočeš, in ti bom dal.« ²³ In prisegel ji je: »Kar koli me poprosiš, ti bom dal, do polovice svojega kraljestva.« ²⁴ Odšla je ven in svoji materi rekla: »Kaj naj prosim?« Ta pa je rekla: »Glavo Janeza Krstnika.« ²⁵ In brž je pohitela pred kralja ter ga prosila: »Hočem, da mi takoj daš na krožniku glavo Janeza Krstnika.« ²⁶ Kralj se je zelo užalostil, toda zaradi prisege in zaradi gostov ji ni hotel odreči; ²⁷ takoj je poslal krvnika in ukazal prinesti njegovo glavo. Ta je šel, ga v ječi obglavil ²⁸ in njegovo glavo prinesel na krožniku ter jo dal deklici, deklica pa jo je dala materi. ²⁹ Ko so to zvedeli njegovi učenci, so prišli, vzeli truplo in ga položili v grob.

When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law, ²⁸ then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, ²⁹ “Now you are releasing your servant, Master, According to your word, in peace; ³⁰ For my eyes have seen your salvation, ³¹ Which you have prepared before the face of all peoples; ³² A light for revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of your people Israel.” ³³ Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him, ³⁴ and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. ³⁵ Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” ³⁶ There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, ³⁷ and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn’t depart from the temple, worshipping with fastings and petitions night and day. ³⁸ Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem. ³⁹ When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. ⁴⁰ The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

Simeonovo in Anino prerokovanje

³³ Njegov oče in njegova mati sta se čudila temu, kar se je o njem govorilo. ³⁴ In

Simeon jih je blagoslovil

in rekel Mariji, njegovi materi:

»Glej, ta je postavljen v padec in vstajenje mnogih v Izraelu in v znamenje, kateremu se bo nasprotovalo – ³⁵ pa tudi tvojo lastno dušo bo presunil meč – da se razodenejo misli iz mnogih src.« ³⁶ In bila je neka prerokinja Ana, Fanuelova hči iz Aserjevega rodu, že zelo v letih. Potem ko je z možem preživela sedem let od svojega devištva, ³⁷ je bila vdova do štiriinosemdesetih let; ni zapuščala templja, ampak je s postom in molitvijo Bogu služila noč in dan. ³⁸ In prav tisto uro je prišla tja in hvalila Boga ter o njem pripovedovala vsem, ki so v Jeruzalemu pričakovali odrešenja.

Skrito življenje v Nazaretu

³⁹ Ko so izvršili vse po Gospodovi postavi, so se vrnili v Galilejo, v svoje mesto Nazaret. ⁴⁰ Dete pa je raslo in se krepilo, vedno bolj polno modrosti, in božja milost je bila z njim.

The angel of Yahweh was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. ¹⁷ David spoke to Yahweh when he saw the angel who struck the people, and said, Behold, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? ⁴ Jezus jim je pa rekel: »Prerok ni brez časti, razen v svojem kraju in med svojimi sorodniki in na svojem domu.« ⁵ In ni mogel tam storiti nobenega čudeža, razen da je na nekatere bolnike položil roke in jih ozdravil. ⁶ In čudil se je njihovi nevernosti.
