1 Yahweh said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill your horn with oil, and go: I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2 Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. Yahweh said, Take a heifer with you, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Yahweh.
3 Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do: and you shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.
4 Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Come you peaceably?
5 He said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice to Yahweh: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6 It happened, when they had come, that he looked at Eliab, and said, Surely Yahweh’s anointed is before him.
7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Yahweh sees not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, Neither has Yahweh chosen this.
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. He said, Neither has Yahweh chosen this.
10 Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, Yahweh has not chosen these.
11 Samuel said to Jesse, Are here all your children? He said, There remains yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. Samuel said to Jesse, Send and get him; for we will not sit down until he come here.
12 He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful face, and goodly to look on. Yahweh said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Samuel mazili Davida
1 GOSPOD je rekel Samuelu: »Doklej boš žaloval nad Savlom, ker sem ga zavrgel, da ne bo kralj nad Izraelom? Napolni svoj rog z oljem in pojdi! Pošiljam te k Betlehemcu Jeseju, kajti med njegovimi sinovi sem si izbral kralja.« 2 Samuel je rekel: »Kako naj grem? Če Savel to sliši, me bo ubil!« GOSPOD pa je rekel: »Vzemi junico s seboj in reci: ›Prišel sem darovat GOSPODU.‹ 3 K daritvi povabi Jeseja in naznanil ti bom, kaj ti je storiti: mazilil mi boš tistega, za katerega ti bom rekel.«
4 Samuel je storil, kar je ukazal GOSPOD. Ko je prišel v Betlehem, so mu šli mestni starešine s trepetom naproti in rekli: »Pomeni tvoj prihod mir?« 5 Odgovoril je: »Mir. Prišel sem darovat GOSPODU. Posvetite se in pridite z menoj k daritvi!« Posvetil je Jeseja in njegove sinove ter jih povabil k daritvi.
6 Ko pa so prišli in je zagledal Eliába, si je rekel: »Gotovo je tu pred GOSPODOM njegov maziljenec.« 7 GOSPOD pa je rekel Samuelu: »Ne glej na njegov videz ne na njegovo visoko postavo, kajti odklonil sem ga. Zares, GOSPOD ne vidi, kakor vidi človek. Človek namreč vidi, kar je pred očmi, GOSPOD pa vidi v srce.« 8 Nato je Jese poklical Abinadába in ga pripeljal pred Samuela. Pa je rekel: »Tudi tega GOSPOD ni izvolil.« 9 Potem je Jese pripeljal Šamája. Pa je rekel: »Tudi tega GOSPOD ni izvolil.« 10 Tako je Jese pripeljal sedem svojih sinov pred Samuela. Samuel pa je rekel Jeseju: »Teh GOSPOD ni izvolil.«
11 Potem je Samuel rekel Jeseju: »So to vsi mladeniči?« Jese je rekel: »Ostal je še najmlajši. Glej, ta pase drobnico.« Samuel je rekel Jeseju: »Pošlji ponj in naj ga pripeljejo, kajti ne sedemo za mizo, dokler ne pride sem!« 12 Poslal je ponj in ga dal pripeljati. Bil je rdečkast, lepih oči in prijeten na pogled. GOSPOD je rekel: »Vstani, mazili ga, kajti ta je!« 13 Samuel je vzel rog z oljem in ga mazilil sredi njegovih bratov. Od tega dne naprej je GOSPODOV duh napolnjeval Davida. Samuel pa se je vzdignil in šel v Ramo. |

Pomoč sem naklonil junaku,
iz ljudstva sem povzdignil mladeniča.
21 Našel sem Davida, svojega služabnika,
s svojim svetim oljem sem ga mazilil,
22 da bi bila moja roka trdna z njim,
da bi ga krepil tudi moj laket.

28 Jaz ga bom postavil tudi za prvorojenca,
za najvišjega kraljem zemlje.

23 It happened that he was going on the Sabbath day through the grain fields, and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain.
24 The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?”
25 He said to them, “Did you never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry—he, and they who were with him?
26 How he entered into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the show bread, which it is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?”
27 He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
28 Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

23 Neko soboto je šel skozi žitna polja, in njegovi učenci so spotoma začeli smukati klasje. 24 Farizeji so mu govorili: »Glej, kaj delajo v soboto. To ni dovoljeno!« 25 Rekel jim je: »Ali niste nikoli brali, kaj je storil David, ko je potreboval in je bil lačen sam in tisti, ki so bili z njim? 26 Kako je ob času vélikega duhovnika Abjatárja stopil v Božjo hišo in jedel položene hlebe, ki jih smejo jesti samo duhovniki, in jih dal tudi tistim, ki so bili z njim?« 27 Nato jim je govoril: »Sobota je ustvarjena zaradi človeka
