1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
2 Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from it.
3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In the same hour came forth the fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6 Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.
13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Are you that Daniel, who are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?
14 I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you.
16 But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations, and dissolve doubts; now if you can read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation of it, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
17 Then Daniel answered before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
23 but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.
24 Then was the part of the hand sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.
25 This is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has numbered your kingdom, and brought it to an end;
27 TEKEL; you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.
28 PERES; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

Belšacárjeva gostija
1 Kralj Belšacár je priredil veliko gostijo svojim tisoč velikašem in s temi tisočimi je pil vino.
2 Ko je tako popival vino, je Belšacár rekel, naj prinesejo zlate in srebrne posode, ki jih je bil njegov oče Nebukadnezar odnesel iz templja v Jeruzalemu, da bi iz njih pili kralj, njegovi velikaši, njegove žene in njegove stranske žene. 3 Tedaj so prinesli zlate posode, ki so jih bili odnesli iz templja, Božje hiše v Jeruzalemu, in pili so iz njih kralj, njegovi velikaši, njegove žene in njegove stranske žene. 4 Pili so vino in slavili bogove iz zlata in srebra, brona, železa, lesa in kamna.

Daniel pred kraljem
13 Tedaj so Daniela pripeljali pred kralja. Kralj je spregovoril in rekel Danielu: »Ali si ti Daniel, eden izmed sinov Judovih izgnancev, ki jih je kralj, moj oče, pripeljal iz Judeje? 14 Slišal sem o tebi, da je v tebi duh bogov in da so pri tebi našli razsodnost, razsvetljenje in izredno modrost.

| 16 O tebi pa sem slišal, da moreš razložiti pomen in rešiti težka vprašanja. Če torej moreš prebrati pisanje in mi razložiti njegov pomen, boš oblečen v škrlat, imel boš zlato verižico na svojem vratu in vladal kot tretji v kraljestvu.«
17 Tedaj je Daniel odgovoril in rekel pred kraljem: »Tvoji darovi naj ostanejo tebi in darila daj drugemu! Toda pisanje bom kralju prebral in mu razložil pomen.

| 23 ampak si se vzdignil proti Gospodu nebes. Posode iz njegove hiše si dal prinesti predse in si pil iz njih vino, ti, tvoji velikaši, tvoje žene in tvoje stranske žene. Slavil si bogove iz srebra in zlata, brona, železa, lesa in kamna, ki ne vidijo, ne slišijo in nimajo razuma. Nisi pa častil Boga, v čigar roki je tvoj življenjski dih in vse tvoje poti.
24 Zato je on sam poslal dlan roke, ki je napisala to pisanje. 25 To pa je pisanje, ki je bilo napisano: mené, mené, tekél, uparsín. 26 To pa je pomen besed: mené: preštel je Bog tvoje kraljestvo in mu odredil konec; 27 tekél: stehtan si bil na tehtnici in izkazalo se je, da si prelahek; 28 perés: tvoje kraljestvo bo razdeljeno in izročeno Medijcem in Perzijcem.«

12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name’s sake.
13 It will turn out as a testimony for you.
14 Settle it therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand how to answer,
15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to withstand or to contradict.
16 You will be handed over even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. Some of you they will cause to be put to death.
17 You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake.
18 And not a hair of your head will perish.
19 By your endurance you will win your lives.

12 Toda preden se bo to zgodilo, bodo nad vas dvigali roke, preganjali vas bodo, izročali v shodnice in ječe in zaradi mojega imena vas bodo vlačili pred kralje in oblastnike. 13 Vam pa bo to dalo priložnost za pričevanje.
