1
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2 The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.
3 The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;
4 youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.
5 The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end of it they should stand before the king.
6 Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9 Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.
10 The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king.
11 Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
12 Prove your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13 Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.
14 So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15 At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties.
16 So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.
17 Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18 At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 The king talked with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.

I. DANIELOVO DELOVANJE
Daniel in tovariši na kraljevem dvoru v Babilonu
1 V tretjem letu kraljevanja Jojakíma, Judovega kralja, je prišel Nebukadnezar, babilonski kralj, do Jeruzalema in ga oblegal. 2 Gospod je dal v njegovo roko Jojakíma, Judovega kralja, in del priprav Božje hiše. Te je dal prepeljati v deželo Šinár, v hišo svojih bogov; priprave je spravil v zakladnico svojih bogov.
Danielova vzgoja
3 Kralj je rekel Ašpenázu, načelniku svojih evnuhov, naj pripelje izmed Izraelovih sinov, kraljevega ali plemenitega rodu, 4 mladeniče brez vsakršnega madeža, lepe postave, izvedene v vsaki modrosti, vešče v znanju in bistre pameti, ki so dovolj močni, da bi stali v kraljevi palači in bi jih poučili v pismenstvu in jeziku Kaldejcev. 5 Kralj jim je za vsak dan določil obrok od kraljevih jedil in od vina, ki ga je sam pil, in naj jih vzgajajo tri leta, potem pa naj stopijo pred kralja. 6 Bili pa so med njimi izmed Judovih sinov: Daniel, Hananjá, Mišaél in Azarjá.

8 Daniel si je vzel k srcu, da se ne bo omadeževal ne z jedjo ne z vinom kralja, katerega je ta pil. Prosil je torej kneza evnuhov, da se mu ne bi bilo treba omadeževati. 9 Bog je naredil, da je Daniel pred knezom evnuhov našel naklonjenost in usmiljenje. 10 Tedaj je knez evnuhov rekel Danielu: »Bojim se svojega gospoda kralja, ki vam je določil jed in pijačo; kajti če bo videl, da so vaši obrazi bolj medli od drugih mladeničev vaše starosti, boste vi krivi, če bo moja glava zapadla kralju.« 11 Tedaj je Daniel rekel stražniku, ki ga je knez evnuhov postavil nad Daniela, Hananjája, Mišaéla in Azarjája: 12 »Poskusi, prosim, deset dni s svojimi služabniki. Naj nam dajejo jesti sočivja in piti vode. 13 Potem naj si ogledajo pred teboj naše obraze in obraze mladeničev, ki uživajo kraljevo jed; in kakor boš videl, takó stori s svojimi služabniki.« 14 Poslušal jih je v tej stvari in jih preizkušal deset dni. 15 Na koncu desetih dni so bili njihovi obrazi videti lepši in bolj rejeni od vseh mladeničev, ki so uživali kraljevo jed. 16 Tako jim je stražnik odvzel jed in vino, ki naj bi ga pili, in jim dajal le sočivja.
Daniel in tovariši v kraljevi službi
17 Bog je dal tem štirim mladeničem znanje in razumnost v vsem pismenstvu in modrosti. Daniel je bil povrhu še izveden v videnjih in sanjah. 18 Ob koncu dni, za katere je kralj rekel, naj jih pripeljejo, jih je knez evnuhov pripeljal pred Nebukadnezarja. 19 Kralj je govoril z njimi in ni jih bilo najti med vsemi, kakor so bili Daniel, Hananjá, Mišaél in Azarjá; in so stopili pred kralja. 20 Kralj je ugotovil pri njih, da v vseh rečeh v modrosti in v razumnosti, ki jo je iskal pri njih, desetkrat prekašajo vse čarovnike in vedeževalce, ki so bili po vsem njegovem kraljestvu.

hiša Jožefova plamen,
hiša Ezavova pa strnje:
požgali jo bodo in požrli,
od hiše Ezavove ne bo nihče preživel,

1 He looked up, and saw the rich people who were putting their gifts into the treasury.
2 He saw a certain poor widow casting in two small brass coins. literally, “two lepta.” 2 lepta was about 1% of a day’s wages for an agricultural laborer.
3 He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them,
4 for all these put in gifts for God from their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had to live on.”

1 Ozrl se je in videl bogate, ki so metali svoje darove v tempeljsko zakladnico. 2 Videl pa je tudi neko siromašno vdovo, ki je vrgla vanjo dva novčiča, 3 in je rekel: »Resnično, povem vam: Ta uboga vdova je vrgla več kot vsi. 4 Vsi ti so namreč vrgli dar od svojega preobilja, ta pa je dala od svojega uboštva vse, kar je imela za življenje.«
