Zgodba pripoveduje, kako se je učenec obrnil na svojega učitelja: “Nekoč so živeli ljudje, ki so gledali Boga iz obličja v obličje. Zakaj danes ni takih ljudi?”

Učitelj mu je odgovoril: “Ker se nihče več ne želi tako globoko ponižati kot so se tisti ljudje.”

V zgodbi je zrno resnice. Boga sicer na tem svetu ni mogoče gledati iz obličja v obličje. To bo šele v večnosti. Srečujemo pa se z njim v veri, upanju in ljubezni že zdaj. To se dogaja še posebej pri mašni daritvi, na najodličnejši način pri svetem obhajilu. Včasih se gledanju v veri nekoliko pridruži globlje doživljanje Jezusove navzočnosti. Da pride do tega je treba imeti ponižno in skrušeno srce.

Ponižnost je temeljna krepost, temelj tudi za ljubezen, ki je kraljica kreposti. Človeka najbolj osvobodi za ljubezen. Ponižen človek gleda na svoje grehe, ne na grehe drugih. Obtožuje sebe, ne drugih. Pri tem ne ostaja pri sebi, ne pestuje svoje bolečine, ampak se na krilih ponižnosti s pomočjo vere, upanja in ljubezni dviga k Bogu. Rad sprejema najnižja dela in zadnja mesta.

Rad je nepoznan in nepriznan. V ničemer ne išče sebe. Z vsem je zadovoljen. Kar vidi dobrega v sebi, ne pripisuje sebi, ampak Bogu. Vedno upošteva sv.Pavla: “Kaj imaš, česar ne bi prejel? Če pa si prejel, kaj bi se ponašal, kakor bi ne prejel?”

Ponižnost je Božji dar, zato je treba zanjo prositi Boga. Hkrati je sad našega prizadevanja. Čim bolj spoznavamo sebe in svoje napake ter se ob njih dvigamo k usmiljenemu Bogu, tem bolj rastemo v ponižnosti. V njej zelo napredujemo, če se lotevamo nizkih opravil in prostovoljno sprejemamo razna poniževanja, ki nas zadevajo. Vaja dela mojstra!

Ponižnost je pot do Boga in Njegovih darov. Pomaga nam doumeti, kdo je Bog in kdo smo mi. Mahatma Gandhi je rekel:

“Kdor išče resnico, bi moral biti ponižen bolj kot prah.”

Še bolj ponižen bi moral tisti, ki se želi srečati z živim Bogom pri mašni daritvi. Da mašna daritev manj vpliva na nas, kakor bi po svoji notranji moči lahko, je pogosto kriva naša premajhna ponižnost.

Kako pomembna je ponižnost, nas uči Jezus z besedami in dejanji:

“Kdor se bo poviševal, bo ponižan, kdor se bo poniževal, bo povišan.“

Kolikor je za koga sodelovanje pri sveti maši jarem, bo postal prijeten in lahek, če bo šel v šolo Jezusove krotkosti in ponižnosti. Ko se bo v ponižnosti in preprostosti daroval Bogu, se bo celo odpočil.

V priliki o farizeju in cestninarju je cestninar ponižno z besedami in dejanji priznal svojo majhnost in grešnost:

“Bog bodi milostljiv meni, grešniku!”

Tako je dosegel spravo z Bogom, farizej pa se je od njega oddaljil.
