7 ¹ Then the Pharisees, and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem. ² Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault. ³ (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, don’t eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders. ⁴ They don’t eat when they come from the marketplace, unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things, which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.) ⁵ The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why don’t your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?” ⁶ He answered them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, But their heart is far from me. ⁷ But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ⁸ “For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things.” ¹⁴ He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. ¹⁵ There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man. ²¹ For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts, ²² covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”

21 Od znotraj namreč, iz človekovega srca, prihajajo hudobne misli, nečistovanja, tatvine, umori, 22 prešuštva, pohlepi, hudobije, zvijača, razuzdanost, nevoščljivost, bogokletje, napuh, nespamet. 23 Vse te hudobije prihajajo od znotraj in omadežujejo človeka.«

You do many things like this.” ¹⁴ He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. ¹⁵ There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man. ¹⁶ If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!” ¹⁷ When he had entered into a house away from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable. ¹⁸ He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Don’t you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can’t defile him, ¹⁹ because it doesn’t go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, thus making all foods clean?” ²⁰ He said, “That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man. ²¹ For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts, ²² covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”

4 ¹ But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all; ² but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father. ⁶ And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Abba is a Greek spelling for the Chaldee word for “Father” or “Daddy” used in a familiar, respectful, and loving way. Father!” ⁷ So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. ⁸ However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.

17 For Herod himself had sent out and arrested John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her. ¹⁸ For John said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ¹⁹ Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she couldn’t, ²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly. ²¹ Then a convenient day came, that Herod on his birthday made a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. ²² When the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those sitting with him. The king said to the young lady, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” ²³ He swore to her, “Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” ²⁴ She went out, and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” She said, “The head of John the Baptizer.” ²⁵ She came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.” ²⁶ The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he didn’t wish to refuse her. ²⁷ Immediately the king sent out a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring John’s head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison, ²⁸ and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother. ²⁹ When his disciples heard this, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

17 Herod sam je poslal po Janeza in ga prijel ter v ječi vklenil zaradi Herodiade, žene svojega brata Filipa, ker se je z njo oženil. 18 Janez je namreč govoril Herodu: »Ne smeš imeti bratove žene!« 19 Herodiada ga je sovražila in ga hotela umoriti, a ga ni mogla. 20 Herod pa se je bal Janeza, ker je vedel, da je pravičen in svet mož, in ga je ščitil. Kadar ga je slišal, je bil v veliki zadregi, vendar ga je rad poslušal. 21 Prišla pa je priložnost, ko je Herod za svoj rojstni dan priredil gostijo svojim velikašem, častnikom in galilejskim prvakom. 22 Vstopila je Herodiadina hči in zaplesala. Herodu in tem, ki so bili z njim pri mizi, je bila všeč in kralj je rekel deklici: »Prôsi me, kar koli hočeš, in ti bom dal.« 23 Celo prisegel ji je vneto: »Kar koli me poprosiš, ti bom dal, vse do polovice svojega kraljestva.« 24 Šla je ven in dejala svoji materi: »Za kaj naj prosim?« Ta pa je rekla: »Za glavo Janeza Krstnika.« 25 In urno je vstopila h kralju in ga prosila: »Hočem, da mi nemudoma daš na pladnju glavo Janeza Krstnika.« 26 Kralj se je zelo užalostil, vendar ji zaradi prisege, ki jo je izrekel vpričo gostov, ni hotel odreči. 27 Takoj je poslal po rablja in ukazal, naj prinese njegovo glavo. Ta je šel in ga v ječi obglavil. 28 Prinesel je na pladnju njegovo glavo in jo dal deklici, deklica pa jo je dala materi. 29 Ko so to slišali Janezovi učenci, so prišli, vzeli njegovo truplo in ga položili v grob.
