11 The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, and testing him.
12 He sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, “Why does this generation The word translated “generation” here could also be translated “people,” “race,” or “family.” seek a sign? Most assuredly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
13 He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.

Farizeji zahtevajo znamenje
11 Tedaj so prišli farizeji in začeli razpravljati z njim; preizkušali so ga
s tem, da so od njega zahtevali znamenje z neba. 12 On pa je v duhu zavzdihnil in rekel: »Kaj, ta rod zahteva znamenje? Resnično, povem vam: Temu rodu znamenje ne bo dano.« 13 In pustil jih je, spet stopil v čoln in odplul na drugo stran jezera.

1 The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh’s help.”
2 Again she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 As time passed, it happened that Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground.
4 Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of the fat of it. Yahweh respected Abel and his offering,
5 but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.
6 Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?
7 If you do well, will it not be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”
8 Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” It happened, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.
9 Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?”
He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.
11 Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12 From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”
13 Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14 Behold, you have driven me out this day from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. It will happen that whoever finds me will kill me.”
15 Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should strike him.
25 Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth. For, she said, “God has appointed me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”

Kajn in Abel
1 Človek je spoznal svojo ženo Evo. Spočela je in rodila Kajna. Rekla je: »Dobila sem moža od GOSPODA.« 2 Nato je rodila njegovega brata Abela. In Abel je pasel drobnico, Kajn pa je obdeloval zemljo. 3 Ko je preteklo nekaj časa, je Kajn daroval GOSPODU daritev od sadov zemlje. 4 Tudi Abel je daroval od prvencev svoje drobnice in njihove tolšče. GOSPOD se je ozrl na Abela in njegovo daritev, 5 na Kajna in njegovo daritev pa se ni ozrl. Zato se je Kajn zelo ujezil in obraz mu je upadel. 6 GOSPOD je rekel Kajnu: »Zakaj se jeziš in zakaj ti je upadel obraz? 7 Ali ga ne boš vzdignil, če delaš dobro? Če pa ne delaš dobro, greh preži nate pri vratih, njegovo poželenje se obrača proti tebi, a ti mu gospoduj!« 8 Tedaj je Kajn rekel svojemu bratu Abelu: »Pojdiva ven!« Ko pa sta bila na polju, se je Kajn vzdignil proti svojemu bratu Abelu in ga ubil.
9 GOSPOD je rekel Kajnu: »Kje je tvoj brat Abel?« Odvrnil je: »Ne vem. Sem mar jaz varuh svojega brata?« 10 In GOSPOD je rekel: »Kaj si storil? Glas krvi tvojega brata vpije iz zemlje k meni. 11 Bodi torej preklet z zemlje, ki je odprla svoja usta in iz tvojih rok sprejela kri tvojega brata! 12 Ko boš obdeloval zemljo, naj ti ne daje več svoje moči, blodil in begal boš po svetu.« 13 Kajn je rekel GOSPODU: »Moja krivda je prevelika, da bi jo mogel nositi. 14 Glej, danes me izganjaš iz dežele in moral se bom skrivati pred tvojim obličjem. Blodil in begal bom po zemlji. Kdor koli me bo našel, me bo ubil.« 15 GOSPOD pa mu je odgovoril: »Ne tako; kdor koli ubije Kajna, bo sedemkrat maščevan.« In GOSPOD je dal Kajnu znamenje, da ga nihče, ki bi ga našel, ne bi ubil.

25 Adam je spet spoznal svojo ženo in rodila je sina, kateremu je dala ime Set. Rekla je namreč: »Bog mi je dal drugega potomca namesto Abela, ki ga je ubil Kajn.«

1 The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, speaks,
And calls the earth from sunrise to sunset.
8 I don’t rebuke you for your sacrifices.
Your burnt offerings are continually before me.
16 But to the wicked God says,
“What right do you have to declare my statutes,
That you have taken my covenant on your lips,
17 Seeing you hate instruction,
And throw my words behind you?

Bog bogov, GOSPOD, je govoril,
poklical je zemljo
od sončnega vzhoda do njegovega zahoda.

8 Ne grajam te zaradi tvojih klavnih daritev,
tvoje žgalne daritve so vedno pred mano.

16 Krivičniku pa Bog pravi:
»Kaj ti je, da naštevaš moje zapovedi
in nosiš mojo zavezo v svojih ustih?
17 Ti vendar sovražiš opomin
in zametuješ moje besede.
